Background
I'm an American expat living and working outside the US for the almost a decade. I started making when I was 15. Graduating high school in 2000, I went on to attend Minnesota State University, Mankato where I earned my BFA in ceramics and painting as well as my MA in ceramics. After a brief 2 year stint in Okinawa Japan, where my making was done in the corner of my tiny apartment after my days teaching English, I moved to Taiwan to pursue my MFA. I attended Tainan National University of the Arts on a full scholarship starting in 2011. During my 3 year program at TNNUA I studied abroad in Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital of China, for 4 and a half months. I graduated in the summer of 2014 and made a move to Taipei. I used to work as the Artistic Director at Cloud Forrest Collective for three years, and helped to teach classes as well as organize events and fundraisers. I currently am working at Taipei American School as a Middle School Art Teacher.
Insights
Statement
I am interested in making works that are inspired from both organic form and industrial line. I am not interested in expressing a specific message to the viewer, but rather trying to create something that evokes a visceral response. I focus on aesthetics of form and exploration in surface treatment.
My functional pieces range in method of construction; wheel-thrown, hand-built, slipcast, jigged and altered... I explore new shapes and currently prefer to make unique one-offs, but I am developing a production line as well. I simply wish to create utilitarian pieces which people enjoy holding and using.
